About

The McPherson Alternative Center (MAC) is a program that provides an alternative to the regular classroom, that is designed for at risk students.

Our curriculum is currently provided through Acellus Learning Accelerator.

MAC provides more than just an academic education. We are working on getting our students ready for life after high school. We collaborate with each student individually to prepare them for life in a career, college and/or the community. Currently, we have partnered with Kansas WorkForce Career Connections to provide preparation for employment and career opportunities for our students and Kansas State Extension Office for Foods/Nutrition curriculum, Teen Cuisine.

We connect with the community to find resources to help our students who are at risk. An "At Risk" student may be affected by environmental conditions (abuse, homelessness, familial loss, mental health struggles, poverty, trauma, etc.) that have or could affect their academic success or ability. While a majority of our students may experience some of the mentioned conditions, our center is not exclusive to those who have encountered such.

Applicants are to be interviewed by a committee before they are admitted to attend MAC. The committee looks at academics, behavior and attendance of applicants to determine their at risk factor. The committee then decides if placement within McPherson Alternative Center is the best place for their success.

Each student is still considered to be a McPherson High School student. They alternatively attend a remote classroom for a block of time. Students are still required to at least earn the same amount of credits each semester, as if they were attending the 7 hour periods in the regular high school setting.
