Eisenhower Elementary Opens Inclusive Playground for Students of All Abilities

Eisenhower Elementary School is proud to announce the opening of its new inclusive playground—a space designed to ensure that all students, regardless of ability, can engage fully in playtime and recess. The newly installed equipment and turf surfacing reflect a thoughtful commitment to accessibility, sensory engagement, and social connection for every child.

Students, staff, families, building and district leaders, local officials, and members of the Board of Education gathered today for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the new space.

The playground features ADA-compliant structures, including ramps, sensory panels, and ground-level components. These elements were intentionally selected to meet the physical, sensory, and social-emotional needs of all students.

“This playground is more than just equipment; it’s a reflection of our commitment to inclusion,” said EES Principal Chris Allen. “Play is essential to the growth and development of every child—not just physically, but socially and emotionally. We want every child at Eisenhower to feel seen, supported, and valued."

The project was made possible thanks to a generous contribution from the McPherson County Special Education Cooperative (McCSEC), which provided the majority of the funding and played a key role in the planning process. McCSEC staff worked closely with the playground equipment company to ensure every piece selected was inclusive and met the diverse needs of students served across the district.

“It is important for all students to have the opportunity to be a part of every aspect of the school day,” said Ms. Melissa Strathman, Executive Director of McCSEC. “Offering an inclusive playground allows all students to experience play and social activities together.”

Dr. Shiloh Vincent, Superintendent, added, “Creating spaces where every child feels welcome and included is central to our mission. This playground represents what’s possible when a community comes together to ensure all children have the chance to learn, grow, and play—together and with belonging ”

A special thanks also goes to the Eisenhower Elementary PTO, and to the USD 418 Maintenance Department for their hands-on work in helping complete the installation. Their unwavering support and dedication have made a lasting impact on the EES community.
